For over twenty years, members of the Indian Association of Dermatologists, Venereologists and Leprologists(IADVL) have worked to raise awareness about the dangers of unregulated steroid use, particularly on the face, which can cause long-term skin damage. Despite being prescription-only medications, these creams are widely available over the counter, with nearly 60% of users applying them without medical guidance.
In 2014 IADVL Task Force Against Topical Steroid Abuse(ITATSA) was founded with Dr. Koushik Lahiri as the Chairperson , launching a multi-pronged strategy that included
- Education for healthcare professionals and the public
- Media campaigns and rallies
- Advocacy with lawmakers and pharmaceutical companies
This sustained effort led to major policy changes which led to a measurable decline in sales of harmful steroids. Dr Lahiri’s work has inspired similar initiatives across Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and North America, demonstrating the global relevance of his approach to patient safety and ethical prescribing.
